How Mentoring Makes a Difference

The Value of Mentoring 1

The world of law can often feel daunting, but you're not alone. Mentoring is a powerful tool for career growth, building confidence, insight and informed decision-making at any stage. Effective at any career stage, a great mentor can inspire and influence for a lifetime. ๐ŸŒŸ

This summer, the BARBRI SQE Prep Mentoring Scheme ran for a second consecutive year, with a 50% increase in mentors and mentees.

Student Ivett Papista shares how BARBRIโ€™s mentoring scheme and Employability Support helped her find clarity, build confidence, and fast-track her legal journey:

โ€œI walked away with valuable study tips that improved my retention of complex material and confidence. My mentor also encouraged me to use the career advice service offered by BARBRI. This service was most informative and ended up being pivotal in obtaining my QWE certification from the SRA.โ€

Be on the lookout for future mentoring schemes with BARBRI SQE Prep in 2026!

Practical Tips for Mentor-Mentee Connections

The Benefits of a Mentoring Scheme 2

Mentoring is a powerful tool for career growth, building confidence, insight, and informed decision-making at any stage. A great mentor can inspire and influence for a lifetime.

To help foster these meaningful connections, here are some tips for mentors and mentees weโ€™d recommend:

๐Ÿ’ก 5 Tips for Being a Mentor

  1. Listen before advising: Your mentee may need space to explore ideas out loud before looking for guidance.

  2. Share, donโ€™t prescribe: Offer experiences and insights rather than telling them exactly what to do.

  3. Set clear expectations: Agree how often you will meet, what you will cover, and what your role is (and is not).

  4. Encourage growth: Help your mentee stretch their skills and confidence, but donโ€™t take over.

  5. Give honest, kind feedback: Constructive feedback, delivered with care, is often what mentees value most.

๐ŸŒŸ 5 Tips for Being a Mentee

  1. Be proactive: Take responsibility for setting the agenda and following up after meetings.

  2. Come prepared: Have questions, goals, or challenges ready to discuss.

  3. Be open to feedback: Take advice seriously, even when it is challenging to hear.

  4. Respect your mentorโ€™s time: Stick to agreed timings and show appreciation for their effort.

  5. Apply what you learn: Put insights into practice and share how it went; it shows growth and keeps the relationship dynamic.
