Mentoring is a powerful tool for career growth, building confidence, insight, and informed decision-making at any stage. A great mentor can inspire and influence for a lifetime.
To help foster these meaningful connections, here are some tips for mentors and mentees weโd recommend:
๐ก 5 Tips for Being a Mentor
Listen before advising: Your mentee may need space to explore ideas out loud before looking for guidance.
Share, donโt prescribe: Offer experiences and insights rather than telling them exactly what to do.
Set clear expectations: Agree how often you will meet, what you will cover, and what your role is (and is not).
Encourage growth: Help your mentee stretch their skills and confidence, but donโt take over.
Give honest, kind feedback: Constructive feedback, delivered with care, is often what mentees value most.
๐5 Tips for Being a Mentee
Be proactive: Take responsibility for setting the agenda and following up after meetings.
Come prepared: Have questions, goals, or challenges ready to discuss.
Be open to feedback: Take advice seriously, even when it is challenging to hear.
Respect your mentorโs time: Stick to agreed timings and show appreciation for their effort.
Apply what you learn: Put insights into practice and share how it went; it shows growth and keeps the relationship dynamic.
